Give it a swirl day in South Dublin County
South Dublin County Volunteer Centre are delighted to announce a varied list of volunteering projects happening in South Dublin County for Give it a Swirl Day. Check out the variety of projects happening in your county below.
1. Home Start - Art project
Volunteers from Wyeth will facilitate the Give it a Swirl Project which is called “What Home Start Means to us” To prepare for the project, staff at Home-Start will ask families to describe what Home-Start means to them. Suggestions might be; playing with friends, having fun, sharing a cup of tea, parties etc. Staff will collate these ideas and it is hoped that these ideas will capture the feel or “ethos” of Home-start.
On Give it a Swirl Day itself, volunteers would then help translate these ideas into pictures and paint outline of pictures onto four large canvas to form a mural. Parents, children and volunteers will paint the mural on the assigned day. As children are mostly toddlers (1- 4yrs), it is suggested that one canvas is used for handprints or free art.
2. Dominic's Community Centre Youth Group - outing to bowling with young people.
This new youth group is targeting young people between 10 to 15 years old. The purpose of this group is to provide a fun and safe environment for the young people to hang out and interact with their peers. Our aim is to encourage the group to get involved within their community e.g. clean ups, fundraising whilst helping them to develop their interpersonal and social skills.
Volunteers from Wyeth will bring a group of 20 young people bowling and then to McDonalds for food after. Volunteers would be required to supervise the young people.
3. Irish Blood Transfusion Board
The IBTB is going to be at Wyeth 22 and 24 Sept as people volunteer to donate blood.
4. Make a Dish for Make a Wish -
Volunteers in various companies have been asked to bake cakes etc to raise funds.
5. 24 Hour Fast for Hope Foundation -
Staff in Wyeth are participating in this fast for the Hope Foundation
6. National Woodlands Trust -
Wyeth will be tree planting with children from the 6th class at St Ronans National School, Clondalkin
7. Oasis Liscarne Day Centre, Clondalkin.
Oasis Liscarne Day Centre serves meals to senior citizens (breakfast and lunch). They also offer a programme of outings, activities and holidays to help older people lead more active lives. Volunteers from DHL will carry out a project on Give it a Swirl Day Project which will involve gardening (weeding and planting) and outdoor painting within the Centre grounds (walls and fencing).
8. Firhouse Day Activity Centre
The Firhouse Activity Centre which provides a range of physical, social, educational, occupational and recreational activities for adults whose disabilities prevent them from participating in other training or work programmes.

Volunteers from DHL will carry out this Give it a Swirl Project which involves accompanying 14 to 16 adults with physical and sensory disabilities on an outing to The Irish Museum of Modern Art and afterwards to carvery lunch at Bewleys, Newlands Cross.
9. Irish Deaf Kids
Irish Deaf Kids works to support inclusive education for deaf children at mainstream schools in Ireland while enabling parents to help their child reach their full potential. Its message boards offer a place to ask questions, share information and talk with parents & educators of deaf children, or with deaf people themselves.
"A Birthday for Ben" - A story about Deafness is an exciting new chidren's book, which is about young children who are deaf or hard of hearing with accompanying sign language. The book will be read to children aged 5 - 8 years in Tallaght library on Friday 25th September on Give it a Swirl - the National Day of Volunteering. Volunteers will help to seat the children before the reading, supervise the children during the reading and return the children to their parents/guardians after the readings
10. Lucan South Community Development Group (Bush Community Resource Centre)
Lucan South Community Development Group provide a range of community supports including Mother and Toddler groups, homework clubs, activity groups and is a facility for community meetings and groups.
Volunteers from GlaxoSmithKline will carry out this Give it a Swirl Project will involve a tidy up of their outside grounds (hedge cutting, clearing overgrown areas, weeding). The scope of the work would be tailored to suit the number of volunteers and the time they can give on the day.
11. Liffey Sound
Lucan
Based at Ballyowen Castle Community Centre in Lucan, Liffey Sound is a community radio / not-for-profit organisation. Their aim is to provide the BEST in radio for Lucan and its environs; to be a voice for the community, by the community and of the community. They broadcase 67 hours weekly and have 72 volunteer presenters. They are licenced by the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland and as a totally voluntary organisation, they are unique among radio stations. Listening live on 96.4 FM or www.liffeysoundfm.ie
Volunteers from Salesforce.com will help with this Give is a Swirl Project. It involves a team of volunteers to make, cut, and deliver the news on the day (25 September 2009). This will involve researching and gathering news items; then writing, reading and recording the news bulletin and operating the production desk. Liffey Sound will produce all provide requirements for the radio project :studio/ equipment/trainers and support / technical support.
