The Mayor’s awards, which are held on an annual basis, acknowledges outstanding people and organisations who, through their commitment to participating in unpaid community and voluntary activities , have made a significant impact on the quality of their communities in Galway City.

In December each year nominations are invited from people resident in Galway city for individuals or organisations who are involved in voluntary activity in one of the following categories:

  • Arts, Culture & Cursai Gaeilge
  • Environment, conservation and Heritage 
  • Neighbourhood & Residents Groups
  • Social & Community Support
  • Sports, Recreation, Children and Youth
  • Young Volunteer of the year

The judging panel review the nominations and make their decisions based on the nominations as submitted. The awards are presented at a ceremony which is held at the end of January each year. Each winners receives a Galway Crystal trophy and a cheque for €650
